![]() ![]() I’m not proud, but I learnt that I needed to pay more attention to the various stages of launch and getting that right before I initiated the countdown. I’ll never forget the first time I tried. After all, space travel and literal rocket science isn’t going to be grasped straight away, is it? It may appear like a complex game at first, but the fun comes from experimenting with the vast amount of parts and pieces, then taking them out onto the launch pad and preparing for launch. I immediately felt bogged down by just how much information there was, but it wasn’t until I was in the vehicle assembly and playing around with different variables that I started to understand what was being asked of me. I had to replay most of the tutorials a couple of times to grasp the basics, and even then I kept having to return in order to remember what certain actions did, how to orbit a planet successfully, and get to grips with everything on offer. Don’t assume that cute little aliens in the animated cutscenes mean you’ll be getting it easy, because you won’t. There’s a robust tutorial at the Training Centre that throws a lot of information at you across four categories, ranging from crafting your rocket and testing it, to resource management and orbiting planets. To get the most out of KSP2, you’re going to need to remain dedicated. The sequel to the much-loved space flight simulator is bigger than its predecessor in every way, but it has also redesigned the UI to make it both accessible and replayable from the moment you enter the vehicle assembly. Multiplayer will be arriving, along with the ability to share and utilise other player’s creations, and the addition of even more parts to create unique and impressive spaceships, stations, and more. As you read this, it will be in Steam Early Access, and knowing just what Intercept Games plan to do after the initial release is mind-blowing. The ambition on display in Kerbal Space Program 2 is staggering, but so is the potential.

In that folder is my pages folder, fonts folder, art folder, etc. For example, in my work flow, I have a main folder for each specific job. I know your questions about the art were directed to Artwork Abode, but I would think the best way to do your art is an art folder for each job. I think it’s best to work on your local machine and then back it up to the server/remote site when you are done. In any event, I’ve always found it dangerous to work on a live document on the server or remotely. Indesign use to be smart enough to know that links are from dropbox and looks for the my dropbox folder and not the link path that goes all the way to the drive name. I’m thinking you’d have to download to your computer, work on it, then place back on Google Drive when done. The last I knew, you can’t edit or work non–Google Drive documents via browser. Ikea lack shelf tutorial9/20/2023 It’s amazing how similar lighting workflows have now become across both traditional tools and game engines. A couple of examples include Impact Checkpoints for lighting, shadowing and post-processing, and Lightmass and Cull Distance Volumes that are used to define calculation boundaries. Part of this will be including detail in meshes, materials and lights where required, but these engines also include a range of features to help performance. You’ll have to keep this in mind when you’re building your scenes. Offline rendering and simulations allow for a greater degree of complexity to be processed, which is simply not possible in real-time. When transitioning from a traditional workflow to a real-time engine, you’ll need to consider the complexity of your scene carefully. You can find training and breakdowns on the Unity website (Image credit: Unity) Unreal Engine, similarly, contains sample scenes including the likes of Stack’O’Bot and the Lyra Starter Game. ![]() Unity created an incredible demo scene called Enemies, which contains a range of cutting-edge technologies that are relatively new to the engine. Over time you can adapt and adjust your workflow to better suit the tools, but for now keep things familiar.Īnother great starting point would be to use one of the free out-of-the-box scenes that these game engines have made available. This will help you orient yourself inside a new environment. Try replicating your traditional workflow inside the game engine and see how it responds. Create a simple scene with a basic model, some simple lights and basic materials. Don’t go all hell for leather with your most complex model and lighting setup. Once you’ve made your decision, make sure you start out simple. It’s possible to try both, but it’ll be worth your time if you’re able to do some research up front. Unreal Engine is arguably more difficult to learn, compared to Unity, but certainly delivers if you’re interested in building large and complex games or scenes. Unity is perfect for 2D and 3D gaming, especially for a mobile output. There are others, but two of the main players are Unreal Engine and Unity. Unity is getting Weta's VFX functions, including facial animation tool Ziva (Image credit: Unity)īefore we get into some of the tips and tricks that will make living in a game engine world much easier, it’s important you set off in the right direction, and that requires choosing the right tool. (Our interview with director Tim Richardson posed question, ' Is Unreal Engine the future of filmmaking?') Advice for getting started in Unreal Engine and Unity The fact these tools are at your fingertips means artists can create one scene, but then create a wide variety of outputs.Ī common example is in the world of film and games where artists can create a film within a game engine, and then much more easily convert that into a game without having to build it again from scratch. ![]() ![]() This includes a purpose-built framework, Mars tools, and an XR Interaction Toolkit. This is evidenced in Unity’s dedicated AR tools, which are ready to go straight out of the box. It’s not only possible to natively create games, films, images, and short videos, but it's also possible to natively generate less standard outputs, such as augmented reality (AR) experiences. One of the greatest strengths of this new wave of DCCs (digital content creators) is the wide range of deliverables that can be created out of them. (In our sit down with game developer Hexworks we discovered how Unreal Engine 5 has changed environment creation in Lords of the Fallen.) Unreal Engine and Unity: what's the cost?Īnimate, model, render… do it all in a real time game engine (Image credit: Epic Games) Materials can be swapped in and out without needing to wait for rendering, and ideas can be explored and quickly discarded or accepted. It’s possible to see the result of lighting changes in a matter of seconds. Results must be delivered as fast as possible with artists responding quickly to last-minute changes.įor artists to thrive in this environment, they need tools that will deliver instant feedback, and game engine platforms do exactly that. One of the main areas that efficiency is of the essence is with pre-visualisation. The hero woman features an incredible real-time hair solution that includes authoring, importing, simulating, and rendering strand-based hair. ![]() Offline processing and rendering is not so important as it is in traditional workflows. Game engines, at their core, deliver real-time interactive results. There are a wide range of reasons for moving away from traditional workflows, but I’ll focus here on areas of efficiency, cost, and deliverables. We got to play a little bit more of that as well with the performance boost and I had a way better time than December's alpha. ![]() (The attachments system, which is straight out of PUBG or Apex Legends, continues to be a nice way of making each gun feel like a unique object.)Ĭampaign is clearly where Back 4 Blood is going to shine brightest. A consistent frame rate was finally able to highlight that, yes, Back 4 Blood's shooting is pretty darn fun. The latest build had a full suite of Nvidia DLSS options that seem to be helping a lot. I'd like to see fewer cards that add minor percentage bonuses to accuracy and more that meaningfully change my playstyle (like the one that switches my standard melee attack to a more effective knife stab).ĭespite feeling let down by Versus, huge improvements to technical performance since I last played Back 4 Blood left me with higher hopes than ever for the game. I'm not yet sold on the deckbuilding layer of Back 4 Blood. ![]() Glancing at the cards in my premade medic deck, I spotted mostly modest health bonuses that, when used with a coordinated team, could probably keep us alive longer. Turtle Rock hopes that building a deck of trait cards will make things more interesting. I buy that argument, especially as a deterrent to rage-quitting, but I prefer the beginning-middle-end story of L4D's old Versus format, still. Turtle Rock told me that the idea behind Versus is to have a shorter, more digestible mode than Back 4 Blood's main campaign missions. When death is an inevitability, victory feels more like losing less than the other team. So far, frantically defending an enclosed arena as zombies flood in from every direction isn't as fun or interesting as pushing through a full campaign map. Health values and attack synergies are balancing details that Turtle Rock can surely tune in future updates, but I have larger issues with the mode's basic premise. On the survivor side, the bullet sponginess of enemies got annoying pretty fast, especially when I was hit with the popular combo of "ensnare me in place and spit acid at my feet at the same time." With such surefire ways to melt away our health bars, I wish the zombie roles came with a little more risk. Unless two or more survivors focused fire on me immediately, I practically couldn't be stopped. Dumping credits into my defense stat with the mid-match upgrade system only made me more survivable. I felt so tanky that I hardly had to worry about smart positioning. The durability of these special zombies is a big question mark for me. The role felt similar to L4D's boomers that spew horde-attracting goo upon detonation, except my exploder can shrug off entire clips of ammo while a boomer would pop after a bullet or two. In one round I played an exploder whose literal job is to sprint into a crowd and blow up. As a zombie team, we didn't feel penalized for rushing in blindly and dying a lot. Back 4 Blood, with its tighter spaces (the small map actually shrinks further over time, Battle Royale style), feels inherently chaotic. Hopper minecraft9/20/2023 I havn't yet tested whether server restarts and logging out unload these chunks though. The chunks will remain loaded until the player physically goes back to the chunks, stops the hopper clock and moves away again to unload the chunks. It won't work if you unload both hoppers at the same time, so if you chainload a large area it makes it much harder to unload all the chunks at once (unless you teleport out of the area) Items go into the wide top and are funneled into another block at the small bottom. When the closer chunk goes out of range the further one will do the same and keep both chunks loaded. A hopper is a type of block in Minecraft that works similar to a funnel. As long as the hopper chain starts in the spawn chunks and leads out of it, those chunks will all be kept loaded. In this diagram, the yellow area represents the spawn chunks. If you go out of range to unload only the furthest hopper (Chunk 1), the closer hopper (Chunk 2) still in range will kickstart the furthest chunk and load it. The hoppers placed on the side of the chests (Image via Minecraft) Next, players will want to place a hopper on the side of each and every double chest on one side, with every hopper facing. You can use chains of hoppers to basically extend the area of chunks at spawn that is kept loaded. Place your items in both the hoppers, then travel away from the hoppers in a direction that will only unload one hopper chunk at a time, like so: ![]() See also farming cactus, 174176 dispensers, 167 hoppers.
